AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli reveals the Newcastle Star he will hug after Champions League match

Newcastle United will meet AC Milan at the San Siro in their first game back in the Champions League.
Stefano Pioli, the manager of AC Milan, will gladly welcome back former player Sandro Tonali.

The Italian was Newcastle United’s most high-profile summer signing, leaving his boyhood club Milan in a move valued roughly £52 million.

He’s fitted in well in Tyneside since then, becoming an early cult figure among Newcastle fans thanks to his classy play and legendary visit to Gosforth High Street Wetherspoons.
It’s a far cry from the bright lights of Milan, where Pioli is most familiar with him.

“It will be exciting, I will hug him with great affection,” Pioli said of his comeback to the Champions League with the Magpies this evening. It will be an emotional homecoming to San Siro for him, and we wish him the best, but not from the match after the one against us.”

The Rossoneri were thrashed 5-1 by city rivals Inter Milan on Saturday, inciting outrage among fans and media criticism of Pioli.

On the eve of the Newcastle game, when asked if this was his toughest moment as head coach, he replied, “I have had good moments, but also difficult ones.” I feel the weight of the derby’s failings, and if I could, I would change the results. I know I coach a good team, and I know we will be able to respond to such a difficult derby.

“I owe them a lot because even when we were playing poorly last year, they were always there for us.” And I am in debt because I am the coach who has lost the most derbies in a single season, but we will do everything we can to make this season a success.”
