‘Back with us’: Steve Cooper says vital star could play for Nottingham Forest on Saturday

Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper has provided an update on Willy Boly. The central defender missed out on the 20-man squad as Forest drew with Burnley 1-1 on Monday night.

The Ivorian defender had started the season pretty well. The experienced enforcer started the first four games of the Premier League campaign and also played in the Carabao Cup defeat to Burnley.

Boly didn’t make the Forest squad on Monday night though. Scott McKenna and Joe Worrall played as the central defenders as the Reds went in search of a third win of the season.

The 32-year-old has been a very useful signing for the Reds. Boly has been a bit of a surprise package since arriving at Forest and he made 15 appearances for the Reds last season.

However, the one thing that has hampered his progress at the City Ground is his fitness. After a fine start to the campaign, it was perhaps a shame that he wasn’t fit to start once again on Monday night.

It doesn’t appear as though he will be out for much longer though. Cooper was quizzed on Boly ahead of Forest facing Manchester City on Saturday.

He told BBC Sport: “Willy Boly is back with us. He’s another one that we are monitoring daily.”

The Reds will welcome back the experienced defender this weekend. If he’s fit, he quite simply has to play, with Cooper likely to revert back to his three-man central defensive system.

Forest are blessed with a few central defenders now. Felipe and Moussa Niakhate have both had their fitness problems, with Worrall and McKenna also in the mix.

Furthermore, Forest have two youngsters now awaiting a chance. Murillo and Andrew Omobamidele signed during the transfer window and they will be in contention soon.

Boly returning is a sizeable bonus for Forest. Now, he will hope to get the nod to regain his place in the team for this weekend’s thankless-looking trip to Manchester City.
