Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Unai Emery explains why Alex Moreno was not included in the squad to face Chelsea.
Unai Emery has revealed he left Alex Moreno out of the Aston Villa squad to face Chelsea because the left-back is “not 100 per cent” ready to feature.
Moreno returned to training at Bodymoor Heath earlier this month after missing the whole of pre-season and the start of the campaign due to a hamstring injury. He sustained the injury back in May in the club’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, and hasn’t made an appearance for Villa since.
Villa claimed their second win on the road this Premier League season at Chelsea, by beating the Blues 1-0 thanks to second half goal from Ollie Watkins. It was a much-needed result after Villa disappointed in Poland on Thursday, losing 3-2 to Legia Warsaw in the Europa Conference League.
Moreno had been included in the two matchday squads prior to Villa’s trip to Stamford Bridge, but he did not travel to London with the rest of his teammates.
“His injury was very hard,” Emery admitted. “He’s been better and better, but he is not feeling 100 per cent comfortable to play.
“We decided to stop some days, maybe one week or two weeks. Hopefully he is being close again to being in the squad.”
Moreno has made a total of 19 appearances for Villa since joining the club in January for £13million from Real Betis. He played a key role in the club’s turnaround under Emery and will give the Villa boss a big boost when he is fit enough to feature.
