‘I messaged’: Reporter shares what people close to Botman have told him after Newcastle’s 8-0 win

Sunday was special for the Newcastle United players, particularly Sven Botman.

The 23-year-old helped Newcastle keep a third consecutive clean sheet since his return from injury, while he also played his part in a historic victory against Sheffield United.

Botman scored the Magpies’ third goal at Bramall Lane, as Eddie Howe’s side went on to win 8-0. It was the first time in Premier League history that eight different players have scored in a Premier League game.

And it was also a day of firsts for Botman.

On what was his 50th appearance for the club, he scored his first ever goal for Newcastle United. It has been a long time coming considering how tall he is and how good the Magpies are from set pieces, and Botman has actually been getting a lot of stick from his teammates for not finding the net.

Now he has broken his duck, and will be eager to ensure that it is not another 50 games before he scores.

It was ‘about time’ Sven Botman scored for Newcastle

On the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, the Athletic’s Chris Waugh shared how people close to Botman had reacted to the defender’s first ever Newcastle United goal.

“I know he’s been receiving a lot of stick from other Newcastle players because this was his 50th appearance for Newcastle and he still hadn’t scored,” he said.

“I messaged some people close to Botman and they were basically saying ‘it’s about time he finally got that goal’.

“What a player he is for Newcastle United.”

Defending is the name of the game for Botman

Yes, Botman should score more goals from set pieces given how commanding he is in the air. But finding the back of the net is not his priority.

The Dutchman’s main job is keeping it out at the other end, which he has done expertly since joining Newcastle.

You could argue that he has actually been one of Newcastle’s most impressive players so far this season, alongside the likes of Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff.

The towering centre-half has been outstanding. In fact, Newcastle’s only majorly poor performance came when he was injured.

But Botman is back now and has looked excellent since his return. As long as he keeps defending like he is right now, he can afford to leave the scoring to someone else!
