John Eustace explains ‘method to my madness’ after Siriki Dembele’s star turn for Birmingham City

Latest Birmingham City news from BirminghamLive includes John Eustace on Siriki Dembele’s brilliant display against Huddersfield Town.
John Eustace joined Birmingham City supporters in toasting Siriki Dembele after the winger’s near-perfect display against Huddersfield Town.

Dembele scored twice in an emphatic 4-1 victory for Blues at St Andrew’s after returning to the starting line-up. The 27-year-old was involved in most of Blues’ best attacking play before making way to a standing ovation in the 76th minute.

“It shows that when you’re clinical it makes a big difference,” Eustace said. “The performances over the past five games have been good, but we haven’t got enough points for those performances.

“Dembs has come in and we have given him a platform to play. It has been very frustrating for everyone that he hasn’t been able to play over the last six or seven games.

Siriki Dembele celebrates scoring his second goal of the game for Birmingham City to make it 3-0 against Huddersfield Town

“In the last two games I have had to get him the right minutes to be able to perform. This was always going to be a game that I wanted to start him in. It’s been frustrating for me also to only use him as a bit-part player in the last couple of games.

“There’s a method to my madness. We have had to protect him in the right way and he was outstanding.”

Dembele scored seven times in his last full season in the Championship – five for Peterborough United and two for promotion-winning Bournemouth – and he now has three goals in six appearances for Blues. The talismanic attacker will surely start against West Bromwich Albion on Friday.

Eustace added: “I have got to protect him. We lost him for six weeks. He is one of our top performers and you could see that bit of quality that he’s got which we have been missing in the final third.”
