Opinion: John Swift injury should lead West Brom to sign ex-Brentford fantastic star

Swift’s injury has left Carlos Corberan without fully-fit options in the final third, but Tariqe Fosu could assist alleviate the Spaniard’s concerns.

Due to the Baggies’ failure to return to the Premier League in the last two seasons, their parachute payments had vanished, and with an absent owner in Guochuan Lai not supplying any finances, there was no real room to maneuver in the summer transfer window.

Corberan only brought in three new players, and no money was spent on transfer fees because the Spaniard had to cut his cloth properly.

And, while one first-team player, Dara O’Shea, was sold for £7 million to Burnley, not enough funds were raised to cover the shortfall, despite the fact that there was interest in players, with bids rejected for the likes of Jed Wallace and Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Overall, Corberan’s squad is solid enough despite the lack of spending recently, but that is when everyone is fully-fit – and that is not the case right now.

What injury issues do West Brom currently have?

Daryl Dike has been out since rupturing his achilles in April, and he is not anticipated to return until at least the end of 2023, leaving Jed Wallace as the lone striker, preferred over Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Another offensive summer recruit, Brighton winger Jeremy Sarmiento, hasn’t played much thus far, while Corberan is having to manage his fitness following a string of injuries in recent years.

The latest setback for the Baggies boss is the injury of John Swift, who suffered a calf injury against Birmingham City and will be out for six weeks.

Swift is an important player for Albion, and his absence for the next month or so means Corberan needs to act if he can, which may include entering the free agent market if there is money remaining in the budget.

West Brom have one senior player position vacant in their current roster, and Tariqe Fosu is a player currently hunting for a club who could make a difference.

Why would Tariqe Fosu be a good signing for West Brom?

Fosu has made a number of appearances in the Championship, most notably with Brentford.

After briefly playing for Oxford United in League One, the Bees swooped for his services in January 2020, adding him to their ranks ahead of their promotion drive to the Premier League.

Fosu played 49 times in all competitions for Brentford that year, scoring four goals and providing four assists. He is still in the Championship with the Londoners for the 2020-21 season.

Fosu fell out of favor with Thomas Frank following their entrance to the top level of English football, and he spent last season on loan with both Stoke City and Rotherham United.

He had better success with the Millers, where he played in a number of wide positions as well as through the middle, proving to be an excellent, flexible asset for Matt Taylor.

Fosu hasn’t been signed by another team since becoming a free agent over the summer, but on his best day, he could do a job for most Championship clubs.
