Jonnu Smith, a tight end with the Atlanta Falcons, had the chance to play his old team, the Tennessee Titans, this past weekend. You might be surprised by his feelings, or lack thereof. Smith remarked, “To me, it was just another game.” When it comes down to it, we have to act professionally. In the end, we came here to try to win a football game. That was my strategy. It was nice to see some of my former teammates and players with whom I had played. However, this is really a business trip.
Smith played his first four seasons with the Titans, setting career highs in targets (65), catches (41), yards (448), and touchdowns (8) before departing in free agency to sign with the New England Patriots. This may all be seen as business. Smith’s career has taken off after a quiet two years in New England, when he was reunited with Arthur Smith, the head coach of the Falcons, after being traded to Atlanta. Smith was previously the offensive coordinator for Tennessee. Smith’s season is off to a great start so far this year. Due to covering Kyle Pitts, Smith has only made two starts in eight games but has already accumulated 29 receptions on 36 targets for 322 yards and a touchdown.
Smith has helped the Falcons take care of business and contend for the top seed in the NFC South as Atlanta’s third-best receiving option. Atlanta is tied for first place with the New Orleans Saints after their most recent loss, so Smith’s efforts will be essential if the team is to make a postseason push.
