Report: Dallas Cowboys Considering Texas Longhorns RB Jonathon Brooks as Draft Option
In the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, there’s a possibility that the leading rusher from the Texas Longhorns, Jonathon Brooks, could find himself continuing his career in the Lone Star State with the Dallas Cowboys.
According to NFL reporter Brett Kollmann, the Cowboys are showing significant interest in the Texas Longhorns tailback. Brooks, projected as a mid-round pick in April’s draft, is seen as a potential replacement for Tony Pollard, especially after the release of Ezekiel Elliott. While Dallas initially believed in Pollard as the feature runner in Mike McCarthy’s offense, his performance saw a career-worst 4.0 yards per attempt despite surpassing 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season.
Jonathon Brooks, who took on the role of the primary runner for the Longhorns following Doak Walker Award winner Bijan Robinson, showcased promise behind a formidable offensive line in Austin. Before a season-ending torn ACL in Week 10, Brooks had accumulated just over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns with an average of 6.1 yards per carry. His impressive performances had him in contention for the Big 12 Running Back of the Year before the injury.
The connection between Brooks and the Cowboys goes beyond the playing field, as Dallas’s medical staff conducted Brooks’ surgery in Arlington following his injury in November. Additionally, the Cowboys engaged with Brooks during the Shrine Bowl events earlier in the offseason, indicating a familiarity with the player.
Brett Kollmann notes that the Cowboys are actively seeking a running back, and Brooks fits the bill when healthy. The NFL Scouting Combine is expected to provide more insights into Brooks’ recovery, with his draft stock potentially rising if he’s closer to returning for summer camp. The Cowboys, who possess mid-round picks at No. 58 and No. 87, are weighing their options in a pool that includes other running backs like Trey Benson, Bucky Irving, Braelon Allen, and Jaylen Wright.
Despite Brooks’ limited college usage, the Cowboys may see it as an advantage, considering the intrigue, upside, and potential for substantial production. Brooks’s draft position could be influenced by the performance of others during the combine, but ultimately, the decision rests in the hands of the Dallas Cowboys as they navigate their draft strategy.
