Latest Raiders News: Antonio Pierce Name His Starting QB For 2024 Season

Antonio Pierce offers Aidan O’Connell a vote of confidence in the silver mining industry.
O’Connell “earned” the right, according to Pierce, to contend for the starting position.

Aidan O’Connell’s status as the team’s starter seems doubtful given the signing of Gardner Minshew by the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency and the prevailing belief that the Raiders plan to select a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft next month. In contrast, O’Connell received a vote of confidence from head coach Antonio Pierce at the league’s annual convention in Orlando, Florida.

Listen, Aidan O’Connell played his ass off in the end. He performed an outstanding job for us, Pierce told Steve Wyche of NFL Network. “You are discussing a child who possesses the mental toughness necessary to compete in the National Football League.” Everything that occurs and everything we do must pass through Aidan O’Connell. Being truthful with you because he has earned the right to do so. Like everyone else, competition is the driving force. We’ll be a good football team if we can make the quarterback room the most competitive space on the club.

In order to, at the at least, stock the meeting room, the coach has now stated that he anticipates using a draft pick on a different quarterback. Pierce also mentioned the successful quarterback selection history of general manager Tom Telesco, citing Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, and Justin Herbert as examples. Telesco was the general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers when they selected Herbert and worked in the front office of the Indianapolis Colts when the Colts utilized their first two overall picks.

Therefore, O’Connell may be a stronger opponent than previously believed in the quest for the starting quarterback position with the Raiders, even if he will surely encounter opposition during training camp.
