Report: Miami Heat to Discuss Extension with Bam Adebayo Amid Uncertain Future for Jimmy Butler

As the 2024 offseason begins, Jimmy Butler’s future with the Miami Heat remains uncertain, but the team is focusing on securing Bam Adebayo, a key franchise player.

Reports indicate that the Heat are expected to discuss a contract extension with Adebayo this summer. NBA insider Michael Scotto wrote, “While Jimmy Butler’s future with the Heat is a bit unclear, Miami is expected to have extension discussions with All-Star and All-Defensive First Team center Bam Adebayo this summer, league sources told HoopsHype.”

Adebayo is currently under contract through the 2025-26 season, providing the Heat with two more years of club control. The team aims to extend this period.

Adebayo has been instrumental to Miami’s success, evolving into a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate while also improving offensively. In the 2022-23 season, he averaged over 20 points per game for the first time in his career. This past season, his scoring dipped to 19.3 points per game, but he showed growth in other areas, including a higher willingness to attempt three-pointers.

Overall, Adebayo averaged a double-double with 19.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, shooting 52.1 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from three-point range.

At 26, the three-time All-Star likely has many strong seasons ahead and may not have reached his peak. The Heat likely want to ensure Adebayo remains with the organization throughout his prime years.

Meanwhile, Butler’s future with the team is less certain. He has one year left on his contract, plus a player option for the 2025-26 season, and is eligible for an extension this summer. This has sparked speculation about his long-term status with the Heat.

Regardless of Butler’s situation, Adebayo is a cornerstone the Heat can build around, aiming for their first NBA title since 2013. Securing Adebayo with an extension would be a significant step toward that goal.
