A new centre-back will be at the top of Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom’s priority list in the January transfer window, according to reports. Sun journalist Alan Nixon claims the Blades are on the look-out for additional defensive cover, with skipper Fernando Diniz facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

United are missing a number of players at the back through injury, including Egan, Chris Basham, George Baldock and Rhys Norrington-Davies. Both Egan and Basham are expected to be out for some time.

It has been claimed that Tom Davies also faces an extended stay in the treatment room. The former Everton man is said to have torn a thigh muscle in the last kick of a training session and could be missing for four months.

The Blades, one of two sides in the Premier League yet to collect a win this season, return to action on Saturday when they host Manchester United. Erik ten Hag’s side could be without Casemiro for the trip to Bramall Lane.

The influential midfielder suffered an ankle injury during the first-half of Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Venezuela last Friday. Casemiro asked to be substituted in the final stages of the match.
