£45m star hints at major transfer U-turn as Newcastle prepare ‘early January move’

Kalvin Phillips, the English footballer who plays for Manchester City, has dropped hints that he might consider leaving the club in the upcoming winter transfer window. Last year, Manchester City acquired Phillips from Leeds United for an initial fee of £42 million, with an additional £3 million in add-ons.

However, Phillips has struggled to establish himself at Manchester City due to strong competition, particularly from Rodri, who has been the preferred choice in the midfield. Even when Rodri was unavailable due to suspension in recent games, Phillips had limited opportunities to showcase his abilities under the management of Pep Guardiola.

Despite his limited playing time at Manchester City, Phillips was called up to represent the England national team during the recent international break. He started in a match where England defeated Italy 3-1, although it was noted that he appeared a bit rusty during the European Championship qualifier.

Back in August, it was reported that Phillips had no intentions of leaving Manchester City. However, he has now suggested a potential change in his stance, stating that he needs to be regularly playing matches and competing. He emphasized his desire to play football and make the most of his time on the pitch, something he hasn’t been able to do in the past year and a half due to injuries and other factors. Phillips expressed his intention to make a decision about his future in the coming months, indicating that he hopes for an opportunity at Manchester City but is open to considering other options if needed.

Recent reports from The Northern Echo have indicated that Newcastle United is interested in signing Phillips in the January transfer window. Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, reportedly views defensive midfield as a position that could benefit from strengthening, and they are prepared to make a swift move for Phillips if he decides to part ways with Manchester City at the beginning of the new year.
